Environmental Manager HS2


The HS2 Main Civils Contracts include both Lots S1 (Euston Tunnels & Approaches) and S2 (Northolt
Tunnels). The combined value of the contracts is around £1.8billion with the works due for completion in
2025.  Scope of works includes twin-bored tunnels (TBM), SCL tunnels, shaft sinking, bridge demolition and
reconstruction, services diversions, earthworks and the construction of site compound.

Key Tasks & Responsibilities:

  • Provide Primary environmental expertise in the delivery team and support of the contract design and
    development, influencing best practice and innovation throughout ECI phase.
  • Understand the Client and Joint Venture Partners’ Environment and Sustainability Policies and
    Processes and statutory requirements as they affect the company’s operations and ensure that the
    requirements are implemented on the project.
  • Developing the SCS Environmental Management system and all required documents and processes,
    achieving ISO 14001:2015 compliance, preparing for the successful and efficient delivery of stage 2
  • Provide operational and functional management advice to the design and delivery team on the
    practical implementation of the company’s policies and processes including external stakeholders
    such as customers if necessary.
  • Work with the wider project team to ensure that all environmental requirements are appropriately
    accounted for within the programme and target cost .
  • Provide management, direction, support and guidance to the programme with regard to E&S
    performance and the implementation of the Group and Sector Strategies
  • Utilise the wider SHE teams and experience in the SCS businesses to provide the right level of expert
    advice into the project
  • Assist and provide advice to Contract Management in the understanding of stakeholders (internal and
    external) aims, priorities and risks with regards to Environment and Sustainability.
  • Provide operational and functional management with advice on the prevention of accidents, incidents
    and close calls
  • Provide advice and guidance, and where necessary assist with the obtaining legal consents, licenses and exemptions such as discharge consents, abstraction licenses and waste management licenses as and when required and as directed.
  • Undertake and/or assist Contract Management in establishing, managing and maintaining relationships with external stakeholders such as local authorities, Natural England, EA, Thames Water and others as required and directed
  • Develop and manage program of, assist with and undertake SHE Advisory Visit, Inspections and Audits where required of operational sites. Participate, as requested in “Company” Group SHE audits
  • Utilize data including the identification of trends, reporting and influencing.
  • Provide advice, guidance and independence with regards to the assessment of and appointment of sub-contractors
  • Research and/or manage research of Environmental and Sustainability Issues and best practices as directed by the Sector E&S Manager or delegate ·Assist if necessary with the preparation of risk assessments and Method Statements.
  • Undertake and/or assist with the monitoring, analysis of and reporting of environment and sustainability performance.
  • Utilise data to highlight areas of further consideration, evaluation and intervention
  • Assist and/or manage the investigation of accidents, incidents, dangerous occurrences, near misses and other incidents as directed.
  • Assist in the preparation and implementation of environmental and sustainability training/briefings, as directed.
  • Other duties as required.

Pani/Pana kwalifikacje

Required qualifications, skills, behaviours and attributes

  • Environmental management experience in the construction industry, ideally large infrastructure projects in rail, highways or tunneling.
  • Chartered Environmentalist, Full Member of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) or equivalent and lead auditor qualifications.
  • Excellent organisation, communication and time management skills, able to demonstrate ability to successfully line manage and provide leadership and initiative. 
  • Project management and commercial awareness skills required.
  • Demonstrates a passion for the Environment and Sustainability, driving innovation and an ability and desire to positively influence and develop those around them.
  • The ability to thrive in high pressure situations
  • Management and Leadership Skills
  • Extensive experience of delivering presentations, talking in public etc
  • Computer literate
